First Glance Review - Kawaii Heavy Duty HD2 Suede Cloth Inner

OK, you all know that I love Kawaii Baby diapers already since I've previously done reviews on their Snazzy Minky and their Bamboo Minky diapers.  I love the look.  I love the quality.  I love the price.  That being said I was totally excited when Kawaii Baby asked me to review their re-designed Heavy Duty HD2 diapers.  I love the new changes they've made and can't wait to test them out on our newest addition.

Kawaii Baby Heavy Duty HD2
Color: Dark Blue  (Approx. Retail Value: $6.99)

The Kawaii Baby Heavy Duty HD2 is the newly upgraded version of their previous Heavy Duty diaper.  Like most other Kawaii diapers it is a One Size (OS) pocket diaper.  Being a one size diaper it will last from approximately birth through potty training and fit babies from 8-35 pounds.  Of course this all depends on how your baby's body weight is distributed.  Also like most Kawaii diapers, the Heavy Duty accomodate different size ranges through a snap down rise on the front of the diaper.  Via the snap down rise you can get a small, medium, and large setting.  I do want to note that the rise of these diapers is a little higher than most of my other diapers.  Not sure if this is a good or bad feature yet.  You can also adjust the waist size to get an even better fit.  This is where you will notice a difference from most other Kawaii Baby diapers as well as the old version of the Heavy Duty diaper.  Most Kawaii diapers have snaps in order to adjust the waist, but the Heavy Duty diapers have aplix tabs.  In the previous version of the heavy duty diaper these were extended aplix tabs.  The new version has the aplix built into the wing of the diaper and they are crossover so you can get a really snug fit.  I love this new change because it looks a lot cleaner, it keeps the aplix looking nicer for longer, and it conceals the scratchy edges of the aplix behind the wings so that your baby doesn't get irritated by rubbing them.

Being a pocket diaper, the diaper has a waterproof exterior and can be stuffed with inserts or a prefold.  The exterior of the diaper is made of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane).  Some say that TPU is softer than the standard PUL diaper cover, but it's less durable.  Not sure on the truth of this statement.  The interior of the diaper has a suede cloth lining.  In the previous version of the Heavy Duty Diaper you were able to choose between suede cloth and microfleece, but now there is only the one option.  I like that you don't have to worry about pilling with suede cloth.  In addition to the suede cloth lining, there is also a 1" TPU strip along the inside of the front panel of the diaper.  This is a new feature of the upgraded Heavy Duty diapers and helps to prevent leaking when babies sleep on their stomachs.  Another change that has been made to the newest version of the Heavy Duty diaper is the pocket opening.  They've made the pocket opening a lot larger and much more similar to their other diaper styles.  I love the large opening and find it extremely easy to stuff and I'm sure my husband would have no problem either.  I also love that it has a flap to hold the inserts in.  Each diaper comes with two microfiber inserts.  You can use one insert for the daytime and two for the night.  I do kind of wish that one was smaller for when I have the diaper at it's smallest setting, but the inserts are pretty easy to fold so it's not a big deal.

The only drawback to this diaper that I can find is the color selection.  Compared to most of the other Kawaii Baby diaper styles, the Heavy Duty HD2 is pretty bland.  They did just come out with a white diaper with camo wings and it looks pretty nice.  I just wish that there were more options than just solids.  After speaking with one of their representatives I've learned that more prints will be coming out soon.  I can't wait to see what they are and after seeing some of the other prints they've come out with in their other styles, I'm sure that Kawaii will not let us down with the Heavy Duty prints.

Overall I'm very happy with the new and improved Kawaii Baby Heavy Duty HD2.  I even got a chance to try it on my nephew Max who is 4 weeks old and 9-1/2 lbs.  I have to admit that I was very surprised at how well it fit him already.  I can't wait to try this diaper out on our newest addition when he gets here (hopefully this week) to see if the diaper fits as well as it did on my nephew, and performs as well as it looks.  Till then, keep checking back from more reviews, helpful information, tutorials, and giveaways at Adventures In Fluff ... and other mommy stuff.

  7. Thanks for comparing the diapers -- I've always wondered what the actual differences are between their diapers. I have one of the originals and now that I see the upgrades, I'd like to try this one out.
