SoftBums Echo vs Omni (now with snaps too!) Review

When I first started my cloth diapering research a year ago I did not understand the point of an All-In-Two diaper system. I didn't understand how those little inserts were going to contain anything. How could I possibly use the shell more than one time???? Wouldn't it be gross? Also during my research I came across SoftBums cloth diapers. They had two versions; the Echo and the Omni. The Echo was an All-In-Two system and the Omni was a combo of an All-In-Two / Pocket Diaper. Both had great reviews and both were super cute, but ack! I still wasn't sure about the All-In-Two system. Being the diaper testing girl that I am I decided I would try out the SoftBums Omni. I figured if I hated the All-In-Two feature then at least I had a pocket diaper. Then SoftBums launched their new prints. Man! They were all so cute! Ok, I couldn't resist and I got both an Echo and an Omni. If they flop I just sell them right? Fast forward 6 months. I've been using my SoftBums for 4 months now and I LOVE them!!!! Who would have known I'd love them so much? I love these diapers so much that I was super excited when they came out with the snap versions and even more excited when they asked if I would review one. I ended up choosing to review the Echo snap diaper instead of the Omni (I know! Who would have thunk it??? I chose the All-In-Two!). Check out below to see what I thought of both the Echo and the Omni, as well as what I thought about the new snap version. You might be just as surprised as I was.

Pod Options

SoftBums Echo w/Hook & Loop Closure - $21.95 / 6-35 lbs (Overall Rating: ♥♥♥♥)

4 mos - 10.5 lbs
Ease Of Use: ♥♥♥♥ - This diaper is super easy to use!  I really like the toggle system for size adjustments.  Once you get the fit correct you don't have to worry about it for a few weeks or even months till your baby grows.  I really like that I can make the adjustments while I have the diaper on Linc.  It makes the fitting process much faster.  I also really like the hook and loop closure.  It's so fast and easy!  The pods are pretty fast to put on as well.  The DryTouch pod is the easiest to put on, but once I got the hang of flipping the larger pods down then those became really fast too.  Although I find these easy, I do find that my husband needs a bit of help.  Since the pod does shift I have to remind him that none of the insert can be hanging out of the diaper legs or back.

Adjustability & Fit: ♥♥♥♥♥ - I can get an amazing fit with this diaper.  The hook and loop closure gives me a perfect fit every time on the waist and the toggle system gives me a perfect fit on the legs.  I can adjust them the tiniest fraction of an inch.  I could even get a super great fit right after Linc was born.  These diapers get pretty small (by small I mean Linc was a little over 8 lbs).  I also LOVE the trim fit of this diaper.  That has to be my favorite part along with the toggle.  I love how skinny they are between the legs so that Linc's legs can actually come together unlike a lot of other diapers he has.

Leak Protection: ♥♥♥♥ - These diapers have been pretty good as far as leak protection.  During the day I use either a DryTouch Pod or an Organic Bamboo Pod.  At night I add one of the Mini Pods to the main pod and have no leaks.  I did have leaks when I used them in the newborn phase, but that might be because I was only using the Organic Bamboo Mini Pod, and not the DryTouch Mini Pod.  I also noticed that if Linc made an extreme poop I could see the poop color coming through the leg seam holes.  It was not enough to get on clothing, but enough to show yellow coloring.  I'm not sure if all three of my SoftBums do this and I just don't notice because the other two are darker colors, or if this particular diaper is just defective.

Wash Routine: ♥♥♥♥ - For the most part the wash routine is very easy.  The shells wash up very nicely and are very fast to dry on my drying rack.  The pods wash up well and dry fast in the dryer.  My only complaint is that the laundry tabs are not reliable.  I have no problem when I fold the wings back and attach them to each other though.  Watch my video to see how to do this.

Bang For The Buck: ♥♥♥♥♥ - I think this diaper system is a great deal.  Not only is it a One Size system that actually fits a newborn, but it's also an All In Two system so you can actually get on average three uses out of each diaper.  If you buy the Echo DryTouch 3 Pack that comes out to roughly $12 per diaper change.  Great deal!!!

Quality & Durability: ♥♥♥♥ - Overall I feel like the quality and durability of this diaper is good.  It still looks in great condition after 4 months of use.  The only downfalls are the hook and loop closure and some of the prints.  It seems like the hook and loop closure is slightly less strong than it was when I first got it.  The  bacon and eggs print is also fading a bit.  The other two diapers still look great.

The Look: ♥♥♥♥ - I really like the look of this diaper.  I love the bright fun colors and I love the prints they come out with periodically.  I wish they carried more prints all the time though.  I'm a prints type of girl.  I really like the the new promotion they are doing this year with the Calendar Bums though.  How fun to have a limited edition color come out each month.  I'm a sucker for limited edition.

SoftBums Echo w/Snap Closure - $21.95 / 6-35 lbs (Overall Rating: ♥♥♥♥)
**Refer to the SoftBums Echo Hook and Loop review for all categories below.  I've only noted differences specific to the snap version below**

Ease Of Use: ♥♥♥♥ - The snap version is just as easy to use as the hook and loop version.  It does take me a bit longer to put the diaper on, but it's a lot faster to take off.  I don't have to worry about flipping the wings around and sticking them together before throwing the diaper in my pail.  All I have to do is take off the diaper and throw it in my laundry pail.

Adjustability & Fit: ♥♥♥♥ - All aspects of the fit and adjustability of this diaper are the same as the hook and loop version except for the wing closure.  I knocked off one heart for the snap version because I don't feel I can get quite as customized of a fit with snaps.  Every once in awhile Linc is in between snaps so I have to decide if I want the waist to be just a little tight or a little loose.

Leak Protection: ♥♥♥♥ - Same great leak protection as the Echo hook and loop version.

Wash Routine: ♥♥♥♥♥ - Same as the Echo hook and loop version except easier because it's snaps.  I don't have to worry about the hook and loop sticking to everything and I don't have to worry about picking lint out of the closures.  I just throw them in the wash, dry them, and then put them away.  So easy!

Bang For The Buck: ♥♥♥♥♥ - Same great deal as the Echo hook and loop version.

Quality & Durability: ♥♥♥♥♥ - Same great quality as the Echo hook and loop version only I don't have to worry about the hook and loop.  The snaps stay great looking forever!

The Look: ♥♥♥♥ - Same great look as the Echo hook and loop version.  I'm actually not partial to either the hook and loop version or the snap version.  I like the look of them both.
Lincoln @ 4 mos & 17.5 lbs

SoftBums Omni (ratings based on H&L) - $21.95 / 6-40 lbs (Overall Rating: ♥♥♥♥)
**Refer to the SoftBums Echo Hook & Loop version for the basic performance review.  Refer to the SoftBums Echo Snaps version for the snaps review.  I've only noted the differences specific to the Omni version below**

Ease Of Use: ♥♥♥♥ - Same great toggle system as the Echo.  Same great options with snap or hook and loop closures.  Same great snap in pods.  The only difference between the Echo and the Omni as far as ease of use is the pocket on the Omni.  The pocket is optional to use since you can just use it as an All In Two system if you wish.  If you do decide to use the pocket then there is the extra effort of stuffing and un-stuffing, but I find this pocket very easy to stuff and un-stuff since it is so large

Adjustability & Fit: ♥♥♥♥ - Same great adjustability as the Echo.  See above for how the snap version and hook and loop versions differ above.  The only difference is the fit of the diaper.  The Omni diaper is a lot larger between the legs than the Echo version so it fits a little bulkier than the Echo version.  Because of this the diaper also fits babies that are larger better than the Echo version.  It actually fits babies up to 40 pounds vs 35 pounds for the Echo version.  I personally prefer the trim fit of the Echo better, but I might change my tune when Linc gets bigger.

Leak Protection: ♥♥♥♥ - Same great leak protection as the Echo version.  The only difference is now you have a pocket to work with.  I find this helpful when it comes to the difference between daytime and nighttime diapering.  During the day I use the snap in All In Two system so that I get to use the shell more often.  During the night I use a combo of the All In Two system and the pocket.  I stuff the pocket with a Mini Pod and snap a larger pod on top of the pocket.  Another way I've used these so that they are always ready to use is to just use the Echos for the day and the Omni at night.  That way I can have the pocket already stuffed and pod already snapped in to use ahead of time.

Wash Routine: ♥♥♥♥♥ - Same wash routine as the Echo with the same differences in the hook and loop version and the snap version.  The only difference is that you need to remember to un-stuff the pocket before washing and you have to stuff the pocket if you're using the diaper that way.

Bang For The Buck: ♥♥♥♥♥ - Same great deal as the SoftBums Echo, but with an extra added bonus.  You get both an AI2 and a Pocket all in one diaper!  That's an awesome deal!  Who doesn't love versatility???

Quality & Durability: ♥♥♥♥ - Same as the Echo.

The Look: ♥♥♥♥ -  Same great look as the Echo only a little wider between the legs.  I personally prefer the trimmer look of the Echo, but I might change my tune when Linc gets bigger.
Lincoln @ 4 mos & 17.5 lbs
In Conclusion ...
If you couldn't tell already, I LOVE SoftBums ! ! !  The real kicker is that I almost didn't even try the Echo version because I didn't think I would like an All In Two system, but I actually like the Echo better.  It's just so easy to snap a pod in and go.  Not to mention (for the millionth time) that I love the trim fit of the Echo and that I can get several uses out of one diaper.  That's not to say that I don't like the Omni.  I love the Omni too, but if I had to choose one the Echo would win out.  I just can't get past that super trim fit.  So Awesome!  As far as the snap version and the hook and loop version I'm on the fence.  I really like both for different reasons.  I love that the snaps will stay nice looking for years to come and I don't have to worry about diaper chains, lint, or remembering to fasten the wings together before throwing them in the wash.  I love the hook and loop version because I can get a super custom fit around the waist and they're super fast to put on and take off.  I also like the look of the front of the diaper on the hook and loop version better.  So I'm up in the air on that one.  I think it might take me a bit longer to decide on that one, but so far I'm loving both snaps and hook and loop.So there you have it!  I'm a lover of SoftBums ! ! !

  1. I'm glad I read this review! Our little man will be here soon and we are using bamboo mini pods in our softbums. I will have to think of a way to add to the insert to ensure we don't have too many leaks :)

  2. The Echo does intrigue me... I tend to use prefolds with covers most of the time, and when out and on the go we use pockets... I like the idea of the all in two and would lvoe to try one!

  9. I currently have all pocket diapers, and have been so hesitant to try something else. I think part of my hesitation is that we are CDing to save money and I don't want to fall in love with something else and have to totally redo my stash! That being said, this was such a great review that I am oh so tempted!

  27. Thanks for the very thorough review. I really love the pocket/AI2 combo. That seems like a neat design and these prints are so cute. I would be willing to try this system with snaps. I don't think I'll ever buy another hook n' loop closure diaper. My baby just takes the diaper right off every time.

Softbums makes up 99% of my stash. I love them, but my only complaint is the velcro coming undone in the wash. I would love to get my hands on a few snap omnis!

  34. I also bought one of each when they released the new prints. I also prefer the Echo! My husband (months later) just discovered them. He comes from changing the diaper and says, "I really like this one! Why don't we have more of these?". Umm.....were you just asking me to buy more diapers?!

  72. I am totally new to modern cloth diapering. I had used the old-fashioned pins an prefolds for three children. Thank you for the review. It helps me understand the different types of diapers out there to choose from. I had not known what an All-in-two was!

  74. I love softbums - they are my husband's favorites as well. I don't have any snaps because I love the velcro so much - it doesn't curl up like other velcro-closure diapers and the laundry tabs actually WORK! I don't re-use my covers, so I don't really use them like they are intended, but I still love them - they look so stinkin' cute on his little bum! I even got professional pictures taken in a chocolate one. :-)

  104. They both sound great, but I think I lean more towards the Echo after hearing that it is more narrow. (My daughter is little!) As for the Omni, is the snap for the AI2 exposed if being used solely as a pocket? I do like the idea of using the AI2 and pocket at the same time for extra stuffin'. ngiraldi at gmail dot com

    ReplyDelete
  107. Nikki - No, the snap is not exposed when the Omni is used as a pocket. It's covered by the lining. You could also still snap your insert while it's in the pocket too.

  109. It is good to see a side by side comparison like this, I like how trim the Echo is

  110. i like the hook and loop that is square and the backside is cloth (unlike BG's)there is no curling then.

  111. I would love to try a snaps Softbums! Alas they are so elusive!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Amazing size difference from smallest setting to largest setting!!

    ReplyDelete
  113. SoftBums is AWESOME, we have the eggs and bacon print too!

    ReplyDelete
  114. I love how they fit newborns. It is hard to find something that truly fits a newborn. Love that bacon and eggs print.. very appropriate for a newborn :)

  115. This is a very helpful review I've been thinking about getting a softbums diaper for my one month twin boys. Thank you for reviewing.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I've never used cloth diapers, but it's definitely something that I want to try with our new baby.

    ReplyDelete
  117. So glad to read your review of the Softbums! I have a couple of these in my stash and now I am just waiting on the arrival of my baby. You have answered many of my questions. I can't wait to try these out myself. I agree with you...I wish they had more patterns.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Thank you for the great comparision! i have been curious about the difference but havent been able to try these out yet! Very Helpful!

  119. The omni seems like it would be great at holding in leaks - especially at night!

    ReplyDelete
  120. I like the slimness of the side panels. They seem good for babes with chunky legs (like my baby).

  121. I like how your video showed how to adjust the leg openings. My baby's legs and waist aren't proportional, but this diapers looks like it might work for him.

    ReplyDelete
  122. These look so cute! I can't get their website to show me ALL the prints though...obviously I'm screwing up somehow. But oh well. So many options :)

    ReplyDelete
  123. I love that you had experience with three of their diapers with this review... and 6 months worth of experience for two of them. Makes me feel good about your review :-)

    ReplyDelete
  124. I love softbums. It was very interesting to see what other's think about them also.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Love the cute prints and that the diaper now comes in snaps.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Great information! Just starting out and I have similar misgivings about all in two systems. So, thansk for your perspective!

    ReplyDelete
  127. Ok I'm glad I read this all and that you were completely honest! I'd love to try one of these diapers but I'll have to remember to remind hubby to be careful of the pads. Plus, now that I can get snaps it will be much better! I love velcro, but if it's going to wear, not so much. But the bang for the buck on these diapers is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  128. That is an awesome green. It would fit right into my establishing rainbow! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  129. I also use both the echo and the omni, but I only have aplix closures right now. I like the echo better but I also have a skinny baby so the fit is just better on her skinny legs. I would love to try them in snaps though!! Great review.

  130. Thank you for this review i've been wanting to try these forever!

    ReplyDelete
  131. I would LOVE to win this diaper, it seems amazing! I love the toggle sizing, thanks for the review Chana!

    ReplyDelete
  132. I'm still puzzled by the AIO/Pocket option, but I'd love to try the Omni out for myself!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Sorry if I didn't explain it well enough. The Omni's are essentially a pocket diaper, but they have a snap inside the pocket so you can also use it like an AI2 like the Echo. It just gives you more options.

      Delete
  133. great review, echo seems better for trimness =)

    ReplyDelete
  134. The versatility of the Omini as an AI2 or Pocket Diaper is an attractive feature. I like the idea of the slide2size and because of that feature I am very interested in trying out the diapers on my newborn when he arrives in June 2012.

I have bought one of each of the popular brands of cloth diapers (Fuzzi Bunz, Bum Genius, Thirsties, itti Bitti Tutto, Bummis, Blueberry, Kissas, etc). I have been building my CD stash! I don't have this one yet but I am always looking for new diapers to purchase and try!

    Great review!

  135. Love this review because I never considered this cloth diaper before! Thank you!

  136. I love the side by side comparison photos. When shopping for them online, it's hard to SEE what the differences are. With the side by side photos, it really helps!

    ReplyDelete
  137. I've never tried an AI2 system, but this looks like a great one to try first!

    ReplyDelete
  138. Wow, this looks like a crazy versatile CD!

    ReplyDelete
  139. These reviews are awesome! I'm just now starting to look into CD (my son is 4 months old)and have no clue where to start, but this was very helpful. I can't wait to check out your other reviews!

  140. Looks and sounds like a great diaper! I've never tried an AI2 yet but i'd like to!

    ReplyDelete
  141. i never understood the two in one system either.

  142. I love how trim the Echo seems. The bacon and egg print is too cute. What adorable models:-)

    ReplyDelete
  143. An AI2 system is something I thought I'd stay away from, as I already have my stash in place. But your review has me thinking twice.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Love the softbums!

    ReplyDelete
  145. The prints are fabulous as well as I love that you can truly use this one size diaper on a newborn. I'm looking at some of the other diapers in my stash thinking no way this is gonna fit straight out of the shoot!!

    Thanks for reviewing these!

    ReplyDelete
  146. Been dying to try the snaps! My velcros is wearing :(

    ReplyDelete
  147. Thanks for the great review! I have heard such great things about Softbums. I may have to get some!

    ReplyDelete
  148. I'm excited about cloth diapering, but it's kind of confusing and this review was really helpful. Thanks!

  149. I'd love to try Softbums- both the Echo and Omni sound like great diapers!

  151. Thanks for the review! I just have a couple questions. My first is due in September, so I'm new to all of this, but after tons of research, I think I like the All in 2 systems the best.
How easily could you use prefolds instead of the snap-in pods in each of them? Also, do you think the Echo would be better for newborns because it's a little thinner?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You could totally use prefolds instead of the snap in pods. I would use the smallest prefolds you could find though ... especially if you get the echo because they're really trim. Yes, I do think the Echo is better for newborns due to the trimness. Linc is a pretty big guy now and I still prefer the Echo.

    Thanks

  153. We love softbums and would love to try the snap version... only have aplix so far. They are by far my favorite diaper... easy changes and no stuffing required!

    ReplyDelete
  154. Great Review! Saved me some research time :)

    ReplyDelete
  155. If both of these really fit down to 6 pounds, I'm in. I have lots of one size diapers from my toddler, but none of them fit her the first couple of months.

    ReplyDelete
  156. the price has been a deterrent for me trying either the Echo or the Omni, but your review has pushed me over the edge - i need to try one, or both!

    ReplyDelete
  157. I've never had any luck with pockets. I have found that the pee can make it out of the diaper faster than it can soak into the pocket. I end up putting the liners inside the diaper but not in the pocket. It works.

    ReplyDelete
  158. The echo would be amazing for a newborn with the trimmer fit. And they're so cute! I personally prefer the look of the hook and loop to the snaps, but still both very adorable for a fluffy butt!

    ReplyDelete
  159. I prefer the Omni over the Echo because I have a big baby boy and they give a little better fit. I love both of them though.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I really like that they have these in snaps now. My baby can undo aplix.

    ReplyDelete
  161. We have one aplix softbums but would love to try the snap version. I love how easy they are to use. Definitely daddy proof

    ReplyDelete
  163. Wow, this is a very thorough review but I still can't decide between the Echo or Omni! I might just have to buy them both!

    ReplyDelete
  164. I will be starting to cloth diaper in June and have already bought both echos and omnis along with some other brands and i think these will be my fave dipes!

  166. I think I would like the versatility of the omni more.

    ReplyDelete
  167. We have the Omni and I love it (in aplix)... now I have, to have the Omni in snaps!

    ReplyDelete
  168. I really want to try an AI2 diaper eventually, but right now we're going for cheaper diapers. I don't think I'll buy any aplix, mostly because their resale value can be lower after the aplix has worn down. Also because I don't want the baby to be able to remove his diaper lol. But these look like a good buy. Love the bacon and eggs print!

    ReplyDelete
  169. awesome review!!! your LO is so cute. I agree, softbums are great. I love them. I have a mix of echo and omni and love them pretty equally.

    ReplyDelete
  170. I love how much trimmer the echo is! the print is super cute too

    ReplyDelete
  171. I need to try the echo thanks for the review of these diapers :)

    ReplyDelete
  172. Great review! I love that bacon and egg pattern!!

    ReplyDelete
  173. This was a really great and thorough review! I've always wanted to try SoftBums (both the Echo and Omni) and your comparison was very helpful - especially about the size difference between the Echo and Omni shells (that the Echo is a bit trimmer between the legs). My daughter is 2.5 yrs so I've got a little bit of time left to try out a new diaper system and it's gonna be SoftBums for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  174. Once again this is a diaper ive never tried. I can say i use all in two alvababy and love that i can remove the insert.

    ReplyDelete
  175. They have some adorable prints!

    ReplyDelete
  176. That bacon and eggs print just kills me. Love it!

  177. I love that they now come with snaps! Their diapers look so soft and comfy. I'd love to try one.

  178. thank you for such a thorough review! i love that they are now offering snaps!

    ReplyDelete
  179. I'm a fan of Softbums (although at first I hated them because I got a bum diaper that literally fell apart at the seams... ) but I'd love to try their bamboo insert!

    ReplyDelete
  180. Excellent review! I think I'd love to try the Echo because I don't have very many super trim diapers as of yet.

    ReplyDelete
  181. I'm intrigued by this toggle system for sizing!

    ReplyDelete
  182. I've been wanting to try these Softbums for a while now. I couldn't decide between the Omni or the Echo so I'm very happy for this review. We are AI2 fans so the Echo is probably our best option. I am glad to hear it is a trim fit.

    ReplyDelete
  183. These look so cool ! I hope I can try them soon!

    ReplyDelete
  184. I am dying to try these diapers out! They seem like they get much smaller for a newborn baby and won't be quite as bulky as most one size diapers.

    ReplyDelete
  185. This diaper sounds great! I would love to win one of them! The prints are cute and I love the snaps!

    ReplyDelete
  186. They sound good and look good. I love the designs.
