BabyKicks 3G Pocket Diaper Review

Bright colors and the promise of a trim fit are what brought the BabyKicks 3G Pocket Diaper to my attention.  Reviews on these diapers were mixed so I was hesitant to buy any at first, but when I saw them on Zulily I just couldn't pass up such a great deal and the chance to try out a new diaper.  When I got them in the mail I was so excited about the bright fresh colors, but at a loss as to how to use these diapers since they were so much different than all the other diapers I owned.  See below to find out more about these diapers and how they ended up working for us.

Diaper Features:
  • Style - Front loading pocket
  • Size - One size with special newborn fold
  • Closure - Side snaps (two on each side)
  • Exterior - PUL in 5 fun bright colors & 2 limited edition colors
  • Interior - Bamboo Fleece & Micro Fleece
  • Gussets - Fleece
  • Inserts - Comes with (1) one-size JoeyBunz hemp insert

BabyKicks 3G Pocket Diaper - $20.50 / 7-40 lbs (Overall Rating: ♥♥♥)

Ease Of Use: ♥♥♥♥ - I do NOT have the talent for side snaps.  These take me forever to put on but with time I get better.  I know a lot of moms love side snaps, but I'm sorry to say that I'm side snap retarded.  I also find these diapers extremely hard to stuff because of the narrow pocket and the kink the snap down rise makes.  The inserts are also one-size so they are too big for the smallest setting and I have to fold them which makes the diaper bulkier.  You do of course have the option of just laying the insert on top of the lining without stuffing since it's not microfiber, but then I have to make sure that nothing is sticking out the sides of the diaper legs.

Adjustability & Fit: ♥♥♥♥♥ - I love the trim fit of this diaper!  I can actually put jeans on Lincoln with this diaper on. The leg fit is OK.  I don't get quite as great of a fit as some of my other diapers, but I haven't had any blow outs so it must be working just fine.  My main problem is with the one size inserts.  Folding them for smaller babies is an extra step and makes the diapers a bit bulkier.  I wish they came with two insert sizes, but I'm sure that would drive up the price.  I also wish I had known about the newborn fold so I could have tested it out.  It's a very interesting solution.  I'm not sure how well it would have worked since the wings are not snapping to the front of the diaper, but I can't say since I didn't try it.

Leak Protection: ♥♥♥♥♥ - Despite the awesomely absorbent insert that comes with this diaper, I still had leaks periodically.  I think it has to do with the fact that Lincoln is a boy, boys pee up front, and the flaps of a side snap diaper cover up the absorbent layers on the front of the diaper.  I found that the solution to this problem was to just lay the inserts on top of the liner instead of in the pocket.

Wash Routine: ♥♥♥♥♥ - Washing is ok.  I like that I don't have to worry about aplix and laundry tabs and I love that the pocket is in the front so I don't get my fingers poopy when removing the inserts.  They do take awhile to hang dry though and I have to throw them in the dryer for awhile after to fluff them up since the lining is bamboo and tends to get stiff when air dried.  The inserts also take quite awhile to dry in the dryer.  Not an obscene amount of time, but still quite awhile.  I also hate stuffing these after washing as I said above in "Ease Of Use".

Bang For The Buck: ♥♥♥♥ - The price is pretty good for a one-size diaper, especially when you take into consideration that the insert is almost a 1/3 of the price of the diaper.  These are great inserts!  This diaper gets pretty large too so it will definitely last through potty training.  I wish I had tried the newborn fold so I could say if this is a true one size diaper.

Quality & Durability: ♥♥♥♥ - I find the quality and durability of these diapers to be very good.  My only complaint is that the fleece leg gussets and bamboo lining seem more prone to lint build up and pilling.

The Look: ♥♥♥♥♥ - I love the bright bold colors and the nice trim fit.  I also like the flat smooth front.  I do not like the look of the fleece leg gussets.  It looks like I don't have the diaper on right.

In Conclusion ...
I love the look and fit of the BabyKicks 3G Pocket Diaper.  I just don't know if they're for us.  I'm just not great with the side snap feature and that's what's really killing it for me.  I'm going to keep using them for awhile before I decide for sure, but at the moment that's where I am.  I'm also questioning how well they work for a boy because of the flaps covering the front part of the soaker.  I would totally recommend that parents to girls test one out though.  They're really great for a nice trim fit when you want to put your baby in jeans.  As for the inserts I love them!  You have to get a BabyKicks JoeyBunz Insert to test out.  They're great and I use them overnight all the time.  Either way I plan on keeping these diapers around.  I think they're going to be an amazing potty training diaper.  I might just have to get more of these at that time.
